Angels’ Mike Trout named AL MVP for second time in his career
It’s been almost 20 years since the Chicago Cubs have had a player win the National League MVP award, but that streak could come to an end on Thursday night if third baseman Kris Bryant brings home the trophy.
Trout, 25, played for the Los Angeles Angels, a team that finished fourth in the AL West.
Trout finished with 19 first-place votes and 356 points to Betts’ nine first-place votes and 311 points.
Trout beat out the Boston Red Sox’s Mookie Betts and the Houston Astros’ Jose Altuve to win his second AL MVP Award.
Bryant was then a near-unanimous MVP victor, taking 29 of the 30 first-place votes.
The only other two players to pick up first-place votes were Texas’ Adrian Beltre and David Ortiz of the Red Sox.
Bryant is the fourth player in Major League Baseball history to win the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards in consecutive seasons, joining some decent company in Cal Ripken, Ryan Howard and Dustin Pedroia.
Chicago Cubs slugger Kris Bryant has been voted the National League Most Valuable Player Award – capping off a stellar season for the 24-year-old.
Daniel Murphy of the Nationals was second and rookie Corey Seager of the Dodgers was third.
What is next for Mike Trout?
Betts also won a Gold Glove in right field and was presented the 2016 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year for the top defensive player in all of Major League Baseball. While nearly any Angels fan would agree that he should have won his fifth MVP this year, his second MVP will suffice for now.
The Major League Baseball has been giving awards this past few days but the most awaited part is the announcement of the MVP Award.
Murphy’s transformation from decent everyday player to an MVP-caliber performer started in the latter part of 2015 and continued into 2016 with a monster season at age 31.
“I’m speechless, man”, Trout said moments later in an interview from his parents’ home in Cumberland County.
It was the fifth straight year Trout was among the three finalists.
While Trout did not play for a winning team, he made an impact just about every single day he stepped on the field. He’s finished first or second in the American League MVP voting each year.
Bryant, who captured the Rookie of the Year award last season, posted huge number in 2016 for the World Champions. Bryant also led the National League with an 8.3 WAR, the highest mark by a Cub since Sammy Sosa’s 9.2 WAR in 2001. Insane stat of the day they won 74 games and Trout accounted for 17% of their runs.
