Angels officially lose another assistant GM as Matt Klentak is hired as
Multiple reports and subsequently “sourced confirmations” say the Phillies will name Matt Klentak as their new general manager. Klentak was one of Jerry Dipoto’s hires, and worked as de facto GM while Bill Stoneman held the official interim title in Dipoto’s departure. He interviewed for the Angels’ recent GM vacancy, but the team hired Billy Eppler.
Klentak worked with president Andy McPhail for a few years with the Orioles so there is the connection that landed him in Philly.
Bad news for all those Chaim Bloom and Dan Kantrovitz fans out there.
Why relieved? Look, it’d nearly be a unusual line of thinking to imagine either Servais and Klentak hanging around after the guy that put them there in the first place had stormed out of stadium and headed for greener pastures. They also have strong backgrounds in analytics. MacPhail, who will maintain a heavy influence and have final say in all baseball matters, is on record as saying that existing members of the baseball operations department will remain on board through 2016.
Both moves were under the direction of Phillies co-owner John Middleton, who has taken a more visible role with the organization of the over the last several months. MacPhail is in full support of the rebuild and has said that a major splash on the free-agent market this winter would be unlikely.
Klentak becomes the man to execute that plan. He’s young, he’s smart (a graduate of Dartmouth), and he’s not a former player, unless you count his time at shortstop while at Dartmouth.
