Monday marks exactly three years since a heavily armed man entered an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, and opened fire on children and teachers.
With an estimate of more than 300 million guns in the USA – about one for each person, if not more – many Americans seem resigned to viewing gun violence as unavoidable.
Recalling his meeting with grieving parents, Obama asked, “How do we tell them that their Congress hasn’t done anything to prevent what happened to them from happening to other families?”
Following the Sandy Hook shooting, the Senate failed to pass controversial legislation that would have required background checks for sales online and at gun shows.
“We found no support for the hypothesis that owning more guns leads to a drop or a reduction in violent crime”, said Michael Monuteaux, professor at Harvard Medical School.

Close to a dozen people unaffiliated with any organization stood at the back of the crowd to protest the gun control advocacy.
He said: “They had their entire lives ahead of them, birthdays, graduations, weddings”. With that, I think people truly began to change the way they view the world and those around them.
Five of the shootings were at preschools, 23 at elementary schools, 13 shootings at middle schools, 47 at high schools, and 73 at college and university campuses. “I’m rooting for other choices”, including Ivy League schools, Ostrand said.
State Senator Martín Quezada, another speaker at the event, decried what he sees as the nation’s “refusal to even have a conversation about how we can make this better” and spoke about his best friend was shot to death a decade ago when a gunman mistook him for a different person.
