Announced the exact release date of the new operating system Android
Google will announce the Android 8 O Name on 21st August at 2:40PM EST time. At the event we’re expecting Google to unveil the traditional snack-themed codename for the OS, finally revealing what the “O” in “Android O” stands for.
The phones that are compatible to get the Android O update are Google Pixel phones and Google Nexus smartphones. Last month, Google rolled out developer preview 4 for Android O. So yes, there’s still a lot of confusion about the final name.
Now we know the name will extend not just to Google’s Software but to the cookies themselves.
The almost complete fourth developer preview of the mobile platform was packed with fancy new features like picture-in-picture and advanced notification management, as well as the most recent update to the emoji library which supports Unicode 10.
Apart from the fact that Google introduces new version of Android once a year, the Nexus and Pixel devices are expected to be on board post this. After the AOSP release are the proprietary Google app releases and updates, which often bring the most significant features. The NYTimes Crosswords app doubled its number of sessions per user after it launched an instant app, said the blog post. So now you can watch a YouTube video while sending an important email to your boss. Android O now has notification channels that let users categorize notifications from different apps into “channels”, as well as block notifications they don’t want to see. It’ s basically a small dot that appears on the app icons when there is a new notification. The feature looks similar to the red badges we’re familiar on Apple’s iOS.
The new Video Previews function in the Google app or the Google Chrome app will allow the first video in the search result to automatically play.
There’s also a redesigned emoji set with more than 60 new graphics and improvements to reduce battery consumption.
While many might still think that this launch date is just a rumor, I beg to differ since Google’s own temporary redirect from “android.com/o” proves that its true.
The Google Assistant is always listening for an “OK Google” call to action. Nexus and Android One devices are likely to get Android O as well, but maybe not today.
