Annual Hyannis Service To Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s Life and Legacy
For the fourth year, the University of Kentucky, presented by Center for Community Outreach Martin Luther King Jr.
Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) celebrated the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in Virginia Beach, Jan. 14. Each year there is a particular theme for the event and this year’s theme is again a quote from the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., embodying today’s societal tone: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”.
Friday, Jan. 22 and Saturday, Jan. 23 – The Union College Next Step Retreat will give students a forum to develop knowledge and skills be become better change agents, leaders and activists regarding diversity, equality and more. Arkansas Tech will host a “The Pack Shack” event with a goal of packing more than 25,000 meals for the food insecure from 9 a.m.-noon in the W.O. Young Building Ballroom.
The celebration of King’s life and his contribution to the civil rights movement is important because it “reminds us of the struggles that occurred for us to gain the freedoms that we have today”, Garland said. He says that he expects a good turnout for the weekend events leading up to the holiday.
Day of Service: The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy invites the public to honor this Day of Service by helping to beautify the native demonstration garden. Day, and tickets for the special service are still available.
The day will begin at 10:30 a.m.at the New St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 310 N. Main, with a march to St. Bernards Auditorium, 505 E. Washington.
“We contact organizations in Albany as well as the greater Bay Area for service projects on Martin Luther King Day”, said Liam Kelly, city recreation coordinator. At 2:15 p.m., folks will march from Bluffton Town Hall to Bluffton Oyster Factory Park.
