Another Day of Protests over Chicago Shooting
Officer Jason Van Dyke has been in custody since November 24, when prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports they cried out when the judge decided not to hold Van Dyke without bail.
Jabari Dean, who has been identified as a University of IL at Chicago student, has been charged with transmitting a threat in interstate commerce, the USA attorney’s office in Chicago said in a statement.
Coming in the wake of innumerable incidents where police officers shot and killed African Americans, it was not unexpected that people of goodwill will march along the streets and make their voices known against such blatant shooting and the conspiracy to keep the matter under wraps until over a year later. Van Dyke defended the shooting, saying he feared for his life and that McDonald was armed with a knife. Protesters took to the streets in the days after the video’s release. As reported by CNN, in connection with Citizens Police Data Project, Van Dyke had a history of complaints before he gunned down McDonald. I will execute approximately 16 white male students and or staff, which is the same number of time McDonald was killed. The videos, including the one from Van Dyke’s vehicle, did not include any audio of officers talking, either in the vehicles or over police radios, raising questions about why sirens outside the vehicles are audible but voices and other sounds from inside the vehicle are not.
Protesters gathered as Officer Jason Van Dyke made a Monday court appearance in the shooting of Laquan McDonald. Although the caucus did not call for the resignation of Mayor Emanuel, they did call for, the second time in recent weeks, the resignation of Police Superintendent McCarthy.
Updated | A Chicago police officer charged with the murder of a black teenager posted bond on Monday evening after a judge set bail at $1.5 million earlier in the day. MORE DASH-CAM VIDEOThe ABC7 I-Team uncovered other dash-cam video of the moments leading up to the shooting, including the camera from Van Dyke’s squad auto. He wore a red sweat shirt emblazoned with the name of that school in court.
Chicago Police confirmed 10 citations were issued during a “small gathering” at City Hall.
The video did prompt hundreds of Chicagoans to take to the streets, marching through the city Tuesday night in protest that led to the arrest of three demonstrators, and a series of Black Friday protests that disrupted business on the busy Michigan Avenue corridor – and gained national attention.
