Anthony Davis Carried Off Court
Sometimes, desperate teams resort to desperate measures, guard J.J.
New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis suffered a right knee bruise in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers that could hamper him moving forward this season. It’s possible that the Clippers and Pelicans are just two very top-heavy teams. It was a necessary morale boost for a team that had lost eight of its last 11 games. He also had four assists, including a behind-the-back pass to center Rudy Gobert, who finished with a reverse layup. Chris Paul scored 24 points to go along with eight assists. Despite a great effort from Davis, the team came up short, and the game was not as close as the score indicated at certain points. New Orleans got down by as much as 21 points in the second quarter before a quick 11-0 run sparked a comeback.
He’s averaging 23 points and 10.5 rebounds on the year for the 4-12 Pelicans, who had their three-game winning streak snapped by Los Angeles. 500 at 8-8 – led by as many as 25 points in the fourth, during which time only one of the starters even played, and that was Wesley Johnson, who went just 1 1/2 minutes. They pulled back away in the third quarter as Raul Neto, Burks and Trey Burke started knocking down shots.
Paul initiated the contact between the two players as he attempted to draw a foul while bringing the ball into the frontcourt. He was carried off by two teammates.
The Pelicans’ next game is against the Grizzlies in New Orleans Tuesday night at 7pm CT (UTC -5). From the game’s opening whistle, Davis was the Pelicans’ only real threat. Asked if he thought it was intentional, he said “no comment”.
“The biggest thing with Alec, and we just keep emphasizing it with him, is his decisions”, Snyder said.
Davis was hurt with 2:48 left in the third after colliding with Paul near midcourt.
“Yeah, it’s a long season”, Anthony Davis said. As I’ve said all along, I think we’re going to be a good team. “Most of all, we sustained it, pretty much”.
New Orleans returns to action Friday as they visit the Los Angeles Clippers. For the half, the Clippers hit 54.3 percent of their attempts compared to only 36.2 percent for the Pelicans. During those 3 minutes and change, the Pelicans were outscored by 15 points, 19-4 to be exact. The Pelicans started flat, including Davis, but over time both defenses let up and some efficiency crept into the game.
New Orleans, which was expected to take that next leap among top National Basketball Association teams, has struggled out of the gates and now holds the worst record in the Western Conference.
Still, the fact remains that if the Pelicans were simply able to prevent slow starts in the first quarter they would be in an infinitely better position to avoid blowouts and try to make the game competitive.
