Anthony Davis may be retiring, again
49ers offensive lineman Anthony Davis, who was projected to start at right guard Monday in the season opener against the Rams, was absent for team’s walk through Saturday.
Davis did not play during the 2015 season for what he referred to as taking time to heal his mind and body after an injury-riddled 2014 season.
According to a report from Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News, Davis is thinking about retiring once more.
The fourth-year player opened up the offseason programs as the starting right guard before eventually being usurped by Davis. Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith also cited a source that confirmed Davis is not planning to retire.
The 49ers’ practice report Saturday states that Davis did not participate for a non-injury related reason.
According to a report from CSN Bay Area, Davis’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, had no immediate comment on the issue. It would be his second retirement from the National Football League since June 2015. Andrew Tiller is a strong option to replace Davis on the offensive line, having impressed over his seven starts during last year’s campaign. Another candidate at guard is Joshua Garnett, a first-round draft pick this year out of Stanford. On April 1, Davis tweeted than he would be filing for reinstatement, adding: “Dealing with Trent is giving me a headache”. Beadles is the likely starter at left guard. Davis did not practice with the team today. “There have been times when we’ve gone at it, and he understands why and we move on”, Baalke said upon Davis’ return to the roster.
