Anti-Immigrant CHUCK SCHUMER: Trump’s new immigration crime office is ‘ridiculous’
But he made no mention of it in his speech to Congress later that night.
“I have ordered the Department of Homeland Security to create an office to serve American victims”, Trump said Tuesday night.
According to Vice News, Maria Espinoza, cofounder of the Remembrance Project, which works with families of victims killed by undocumented immigrants, first approached Trump and other Republican candidates during the presidential campaign and asked for a federal office that would offer legal help and financial aid to cover the cost of burial, grief counseling, and child care expenses, among other forms of support.
Before Trump, the president most interested in immigration reform was John F. Kennedy, who planned to campaign for re-election in 1964 on the issue.
The proposal was not new. The one that VOICE is related to was signed on January 25 and called “Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States”. Maybe the idea is to let crime victims know that if an illegal alien has harmed them, and because of the policies of local politicians police and prosecutors are trying to sweep the perp’s immigration status under the rug, the victim can appeal to VOICE and have that issue brought to light. Most are good people serving their communities.
Trump believes a comprehensive immigration bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to hold a job and require them to pay taxes has a chance of clearing Congress, CNN also reports.
I have written before that Trump is the closest we have been to fascism or American-style fascism and the last six weeks have only reinforced this. Earlier, an Arizona mother who dutifully reported for decades to immigration officials was arrested and thrust into deportation proceedings.
For months, Trump has pointed to immigrant crime as a way to push his policies.
How did he make his case?
“Joining us in the audience tonight are four very courageous Americans whose government failed them”, Trump said. The people – Jamiel Shaw, Jessica Davis, and Susan Oliver and her daughter Jenna – all had something in common, Trump said: One of their relatives had been killed by someone who entered the country illegally.
The creation of the office is already facing pushback. But President Trump wants law enforcement to become tougher and more repressive. “The overwhelming majority of immigrants are law-abiding”, he said. That would make the murder rate among undocumented immigrants approximately.001 percent. The count is also likely low because California does not report the number of noncitizens in jail, though the report noted that based on previous data from the state, the national percentage of noncitizens in prison would likely still fall below the percentage in the overall population.
At best, his earlier statements about immigration reform were a publicity stunt created to gin up interest (and ratings, which Trump is obsessed with) in his speech.
Under the Trump administration, in fact, ICE has been detaining and deporting moms, DACA recipients and victims of domestic abuse – and these are only the stories we know about.
“Trump’s vision is simple: to be an immigrant is to be criminal, period”, tweeted Carlos Bravo Regidor, a professor at Mexico’s Center for Research and Teaching Economics.
President Donald Trump, in his first address to a joint session of Congress, laid out his vision for key immigration policy changes. If the president couldn’t talk about immigration reform to a cheering audience dominated by those of his own party, then when? While those who champion tougher standards are looking forward to what’s next, pro-immigration advocates are skeptical.
Sen. Ben Cardin said Trump’s characterization of violence in the USA during the speech “was just so biased and one that was aimed at promoting his agenda, which is fear“. “‘He says, ‘Well, you’ve got to start working on it again, ‘ and I says, ‘Absolutely we will.’ And that was encouraging'”.
