Anu Solomon injury update: Arizona quarterback practiced for Wildcats Tuesday
Each of UA’s last five losses have been to ranked teams. No doubt he paid a few attention to Arizona. No longer is it Mike Riley’s Beavers, either. While neither of these coaches have been around for it, there’s a unique tale-of-two-halves between these programs.
Scouting the run defense: This area has been terrible in the past two games as Arizona has gone up against good UCLA and Stanford offensive lines and talented running backs. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. PT. They are a much better team with Solomon out there than they are with Jerrard Randall or Brandon Dawkins behind center. The Beavers came close to this at Michigan, but wore their white helmets over the white over black ensemble. It’s a brutal grind these days in the Pac-12.
A portion of the problem can be attributed to injuries that kept quarterback Anu Solomon and Scooby Wright out of action. Credit Stanford. The Cardinal set the tone early with a methodical approach on either side of the ball. They’re both certainly skilled – McCaffrey is third and Perkins fourth in the Pac-12 in rushing yards per game – but Arizona’s tackling mishaps didn’t help.
“A consistent offense boils down to making plays”, Andersen said. Randall accounted for 248 yards of total offense, but struggled to find a rhythm.
-RB Nick Wilson had a quiet day at Stanford last week, with 17 carries for 46 yards.
Scouting report: The Trojans are in a three-way tie with UCLA and Arizona State for second place in the Pac-12 South Division behind Utah (4-0, 1-0). So, too, would a 7-for-7 performance in the red zone for the Cardinal. Or perhaps it was too soon.
Scouting the special teams: Senior PK Casey Skowron has been erratic, missing two PATs so far this season, as well as a 29-yard field goal. These Cats are at 5.9 yards allowed per play, although, for better or worse, there is plenty of season to go.
Over two weeks, the Wildcats have given up 111 points and 1,067 yards.
There needs to be “better communication”, safety Tellas Jones added. He’s second on the team in all-purpose yards average at 108.5.
Below are links to the previous uniform combinations Oregon State has worn this year.
The Bruins ran for 237 yards in their 56-30 win over the Wildcats at Arizona Stadium.
4 – USC has received the opening kickoff in all four games this season and has been the first team to score in each game. The Beavers are the only Pac-12 team that has an open date immediately prior to playing the Wildcats, but that is little consolation for Arizona as it grinds through the regular season. He missed most of the first three games of the season because of a meniscus injury.
It’s like clockwork. The Arizona Wildcats lose a football game, and the complaining about the 3-3-5 defense begins.
SERIES HISTORY: Arizona leads Oregon State 21-14-1. At the same time, each of the Beavers’ four tilts to date have been two-touchdown or more affairs. Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez and defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel have had success with it, know how to coach it, know how to trouble-shoot it. The teams have not met since 2012, when the Beavers won 38-35 in Tucson. The Wildcats have been significantly downgraded the past two weeks, the result of injuries and back-to-back demoralizing losses to UCLA and Stanford. OSU has won three in a row in the series.
