AP NewsBreak: AP source: Arrieta, Cubs agree at $10.7M
The Chicago Cubs have had a successful off-season so far.
It will be interesting to see how the Cubs use Arrieta early on after heavy use which lasted deep into the postseason.
Arrieta and the Cubs avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $10.7 million contract Friday night, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.
The Cubs were 97-65 past year and made it to the National League Championship series but lost to the New York Mets.
Arrieta turns 30 next month and carried the Cubs throughout the season and into the NLCS past year. Considering the cost for each win above replacement in free agency this offseason has been around $8M, Arrieta’s value would be roughly 4 times the amount he’ll be getting if he lives up to those projections. Signing Jake Arrieta would obviously help them accomplish that goal by solidifying their rotation for the foreseeable future. The NL Cy Young Award victor finished with a 22-6 record and a 1.77 ERA, easily cruising past most of his previous career highs. He had a 0.75 ERA in the second half which propelled him to his first Cy Young.
