APNewsBreak: Top Biden aide lays out potential 2016 platform
The vice president has said previously he’s unsure he has the emotional fortitude to run following the death of his son, former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, from brain cancer in May.
On Thursday, Biden advisor former Sen.
Podesta said he did not know whether Biden would run, but said it was time for Democrats to move beyond this period of speculation and focus on electing the party’s strongest nominee to run against Republicans.
To the editor: I happened to tune in to the opening of the Democratic candidates’ debate to see it start like a movie awards show, hyped for a week by CNN and with commercials.
The individuals spoke on condition of anonymity, because they were not authorized to comment publicly about the private discussions.
As he calculates all the angles that would influence his candidacy – a decision is reportedly coming within days – Biden has more than the looming obstacle of front-runner Hillary Clinton to consider.
Journalist Jim Acosta, reporting from the debate location on Monday morning, snapped photos of Biden’s potential place in the debate lineup. He’s made little secret of the fact that he would like to run, but family concerns are still front-and-center in his decision-making process.
Still, Biden and his team are approaching their just-in-case preparations for a potential campaign with a new level of seriousness. But it’s true that beyond the emails, people also want to hear the candidates’ ideas for addressing the many challenges we face together.
For Biden’s supporters, including those backing the Draft Biden super PAC, those signals serve as the reassurance they were seeking that their enthusiasm hasn’t been misplaced. “A campaign consistent with his values, our values, and the values of the American people”, Kaufman said. “Joe Biden‘s vision for our country and its future will be a welcome addition to this race”. Volunteers are already calling early primary states, extolling Biden’s virtues and character, but carefully avoiding his stance on issues, The Guardian reported. “And whether we can a political consensus in America to get it done”, Kaufman wrote.
In the debate, which Biden watched from home, Clinton gave a performance that was widely regarded as weakening Biden’s rationale for jumping into the race as an alternative to the former secretary of state.
President Obama sidestepped questions about whether Vice President Biden needs to announce whether he will enter the 2016 presidential race, saying he must make his own decision. Most recently Biden joked, “as he prepared to welcome South Korean President Park Geun-Hye” to his Naval Observatory residence. Biden’s presence is keeping Clinton from having a huge lead ahead of Sanders, as many people who would support her prefer Biden.
While Joe Biden wasn’t at the debate, the mediocrity of it all may have helped Biden above anyone else – and his campaign hasn’t even started yet. He also drew an implicit contrast with Clinton, who has been criticized by a few as appearing calculated or overly choreographed.
