Apple admits its slowing down older iPhones
Testing of multiple generations of iPhone had previously debunked these rumors. If you are new to the issue, here is what has happened so far.
Yesterday afternoon, Apple finally confirmed the suspicions.
Specifically, Poole compared benchmark tests from iPhone users on iOS 10.2.0 (before the fix was introduced), iOS 10.2.1 (after the fix was introduced), and iOS 11.2.0 (the iOS update put out at the beginning of December 2017). Apple subsequently extended that functionality to include the iPhone 7.
If it did not, the company claims, older iPhones would keep shutting down unexpectedly or break earlier than they should. “Likewise, the camera in the iPhone 3G was capable of shooting video, but Apple didn’t turn that feature on and instead made video recording the signature capability of its next device, the iPhone 3GS”.
Mind you, iPhones will alert you when their batteries have degraded to the point where it impacts performance.
Apple on Wednesday acknowledged that the company does take some measures to reduce power demands – which can have the effect of slowing the processor – when a phone’s battery is having trouble supplying the peak current that the processor demands.
There are some real implications for AAPL stock in this announcement. Apple admitted to significantly CPU slowdowns in iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 models that have low-capacity batteries.
If you do choose to do it yourself and you have a water resistant phone like the iPhone 7 or the iPhone 7 Plus, note that your phone will no longer be water resistant after you’ve opened it up.
Battery life has been one of the major painpoints for iPhone users. The fourth most popular reason was faster processing speed.
Apple doesn’t make it easy to replace batteries.
The iPhone 6S with the low battery wear posted a single core score of 2526 and a multi core score of 4462. But to make the fix you’ve got to know the issue was the battery in the first place.
iPhone are hitting peaks of processor power, due to which battery was unable to power.
Clearly, iPhone battery life is a big deal to upgraders, as is speed.
But now that the tech giant has been exposed, Arment wrote that, “The reputation damage from secretly slowing down old iPhones… will likely linger for a decade”.
Unfortunately, Apple device battery replacements have never been simple, as they are designed not to be replaced by users. Alas, it’s a better alternative than forking out for an entirely new iPhone.
