Apple could choose Intel over Qualcomm for future iPhone modems
According to new data revealed yesterday by sources of Digitimes, Qualcomm will be the sole supplier for the iPhone 6s modem whereas Intel could play its part in 2017. Specifically, Apple seeks documents regarding whether Qualcomm had or has a license or is or was otherwise authorized to practice some or all of the patents that have been asserted by Ericsson against Apple. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s future iPhone business from Qualcomm.
Based on claims from reliable analysts, and Apple’s history of expanding colors and features across its product portfolio, a Rose Gold version of the iPhone 6S sounds highly likely.
Basically, if I’m reading this correctly, Apple must have taken on face value that when ordering chips from Qualcomm for the iPhone, that Qualcomm had the relevant licenses for LTE and GSM standards and now seeks to prove that. The ex parte order is therefore the best defense for Apple against Ericsson’s lawsuits and puts the onus on Qualcomm to prove that it had it’s paper work in order vis-a-vis the licensing agreement.
The earlier report, however, claimed that these modems will be present in 2016’s models which we can only assume is the iPhone 7, while this new report suggests 2017 which assuming Apple keeps to their traditional naming scheme, will be the iPhone 7s.
Despite these earlier reports we have now come across a fresh one suggesting that Intel will not supply the XMM chip to the Cupertino-based giant for use in the upcoming iPhone 6s line-up, but instead Qualcomm will once again cover 100% of orders with a 20nm modem.
Northern Capital Market’s Gus Richard believes Intel is on course to capture a good percentage of Apple Inc. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) has already reiterated that XMM 7360 LTE solution is compliant with Ericsson Samsung and others.
