Apple could release wireless iPhone charging technology next year
Apple has reportedly been exploring ways to get around that, but has experienced issues such as loss of power over distance. In the past, it has filed for patents around wireless charging technology.
Wireless charging technology isn’t new.
It is possible that the new iPhone would rely on wireless headphones and wireless charging to keep things interesting. Several iPhone rivals have incorporated it, allowing people to drop their phones on a charging mat instead of fiddling with cables. The actual process of wireless charging involves electricity being converted into an electromagnetic field, transferred to the device and then converted back. The company has already started working with partners in Asia and the U.S. for creating this technology, and it could be seen on iPhones launched in 2017.
Apple’s competitors, most notably Samsung, have always been selling smartphones that have wireless charging capability. “Apple has also been testing versions of the 9.7-inch iPad panel that are compatible with the Apple Pencil, according to sources”. Apple has said before that wireless charging in its current form isn’t convenient for that reason. Apple’s improved tech would allow users to charge their devices from farther away, Bloomberg reported.
Apple does use a form of Qi wireless charging in the Apple Watch, but it requires the device to be placed on a magnetic charging surface.
Broadcom offers a chip that supports the three major wireless-charging technical standards while Qualcomm supports two of those technologies and a year ago said it has developed a method to skirt the problem of metallic interference in charging by connecting the power antenna to the phone’s casing. This technique helps transmitted signals to pass through metal barriers without any interference.
