Apple left a key Siri feature out of the Apple TV
Apps you bought for your iPhone or iPad don’t automatically carry over.
“Functionally, it’s the biggest change we’ve seen to Apple TV since its introduction”, Ross Rubin, principal analyst with Reticle Research, told TechNewsWorld. The new Apple TV looks to be a capable device for those purposes, although it’s not flawless. Its streaming-TV features also trump those of its predecessor.
The new Apple TV will set you back $149, which is the priciest of the versions thus far.
Apple tvOS is set to become a pivotal part of its “iOS everywhere” plan, with the proliferation of apps embodying the reality that interruptive and irrelevant advertising is unacceptable.
Apple Music is now available across 110 countries for a monthly subscription fee of $9.99 and $14.99 per month for family accounts. Sure, these included Netflix, Hulu and HBO. And it’s no longer pushy about steering you to iTunes and other Apple services.
It is expected that by the end of this week, shipments will reach Apple retail locations, and the company will reconfigure stores overnight to bring their new product to the focus of promotions. That’s unfortunate. Granted, not a lot of folks own 4K TVs yet, and 4K content is still pretty skimpy. Instead, Apple TV supports Bluetooth wireless headphones.
Incidentally, you can charge the remote through the same Lightning cable used on iPhones and iPads. You can connect with him on Google+. And with the Apple TV’s growing role as a smart home hub, consumers could potentially use the device as an intuitive way to control everything from their music and video needs, to lights, blinds, and even the refrigerator. And for those companies looking to survive the transition, Apple TV’s apps model will likely accentuate the need for more genuine, engaging and native ways to promote their brands, focusing on where customers are rather than where the industry wants them to be.
Apple also confirmed to BuzzFeed News that Siri is coming to Apple Music on the new Apple TV at the beginning of next year.
For Apple, this type of reaction to Apple TV is important.
– The remote replaces traditional rewind and forward buttons with a laptop-style trackpad. When I tried the “What did you just say?” command, Siri occasionally failed to display subtitles for content on Netflix and Hulu.
While watching a movie or TV show, you can swipe along the touch surface to quickly to fast-forward or rewind, peeking at preview windows onscreen as you do so. You can ask “What did they just say?” and Siri will rewind a bit and replay with subtitles, then switch the subtitles off. Saying “What did she say?” will rewind video 15 seconds and briefly turn on closed captioning, when available. Netflix is an early pioneer of that functionality, and uses a deep archive of data on what you watch and when you watch it to choose original content that you’ll like and offer an endless scroll of recommendations via bizarrely specific, descriptively-named categories.
