Apple likely to expand NFC capabilities beyond Apple Pay with iOS 11

On the home screen, you will still get to see the app’s icon but in grey colour, meaning the app was offloaded.

Following Monday’s WWDC keynote address, it was unclear whether folks would be able to customize the new, full-screen shortcuts menu. Not only will Safari start hiding annoying ads that follow you around the web through its new Intelligent Tracking Prevention feature, the browser will also find and silence annoying autoplay videos on websites.

The feature works as seamlessly as connecting a pair of AirPods to a device. While it worked, the user interface for controlling which apps were onscreen was never particularly satisfactory: you swiped in from the right, scrolled down an endless series of app icons until you saw the one you wanted, and then tapped the icon to open it.

If you want to allow access to your W-Fi network, all you have to do is approve them by tapping the Send Password button.

Ahead of the launch of iOS 11, there were several signs suggesting 32-bit apps would no longer be supported in the new operating system, which has been confirmed with the release of the first iOS 11 beta. If the password is shared, it will immediately be filled on the iPhone.

That said, Apple did learn from Microsoft’s blunder and made the feature work only on a per-person basis rather than granting wholesale access. Another is by having an Apple developer account and installing the iOS 11 developer preview which is already available for testing.

And those colored dots you may have noticed, those are file tags. Not so any more.

Arriving in the autumn, Apple’s free iOS 11 update won’t be supported by the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c, so it might be time for some owners to consider an upgrade. It will be available for users to download and install later this year in fall. They use electronic devices, including phones, at significantly higher rates than any other age group, according to NHTSA data, so it’s no wonder they are also more likely to be involved in a fatal crash linked to distracted driving than their older counterparts. It’s hard to say exactly how this new functionality will play out, but with Apple now embracing NFC it’s definitely one to keep an eye on. It’s found in the “General” section of the settings menu under a subcategory that used to be called “Storage & iCloud Usage”.

Obviously this is aimed at those who can’t speak out commands normally, but it’s handy for anyone who’s in a quiet (or loud) space.
