Apple: Many ‘genuine’ Apple products on Amazon are fake
According to Apple, of all the products they’ve purchased through Amazon and tested, “almost 90% of these products [were] counterfeit”.
As a result, the tech giant filed a lawsuit on Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against the company Mobile Star for allegedly selling fake chargers and adapters under the Apple name on Amazon.
Apple said in a lawsuit against a distributor that iPhone chargers and other products carrying its brand and sold directly by Amazon.com were counterfeits. Amazon agreed to turn over Mobile Star’s inventory to Apple, allowing it to ascertain the majority of its listed products were fakes.
And yet Apple is not suing Amazon and even admitted that the book seller had helped identify the counterfeiter.
Have you ever purchased any Apple charges from different sellers on Amazon?
What did Wells Fargo’s new CEO know about the scandal?
The lawsuit, which is against the New Jersey-based distributor Mobile Star, follows an investigation by Apple where it purchased 100 supposedly genuine Apple-branded products on Amazon only to find that nearly 90 per cent were counterfeit.
“Consumers, relying on Amazon.com’s reputation, have no reason to suspect the power products they purchased from Amazon.com are anything but genuine”, reads an Apple statement.
They also provided a picture of a charred-looking charger posted to Amazon’s customer review section, with a damning account claiming it burst into flames on the day it was bought. Instead, Apple’s lawyers have accused Mobile Star of infringing on its trademark.
If Amazon or eBay is your go to place for Apple accessories including chargers and cables, you might want to rethink your choice of store. These chargers were not just fakes but were the unsafe one and could even electrocute the user. Fake products might be poorly constructed and did not undergo the industry standard check, the 9 to 5 Mac reported.
Amazon responded by claiming it had “zero tolerance” for fake products on its site.
Because Mobile Star claims its products are genuine Apple accessories, this is obviously damaging to Apple’s brand.
