Apple recalls faulty AC adapters over electric shock concerns
Apple found that “in very rare cases”, the adaptors would break and create and an “electrical shock risk”.
It’s not the power bricks themselves, but the removable plugs that clip onto them.
Fortunately, Apple has only been made aware of 12 potential electric shock incidents worldwide, although it’s taking the step of doing a voluntary recall as a safety measure.
Apple’s wall plug adapter is included with Mac laptops, some iPads, and Apple’s World Travel Adapter Kit.
Customers can identify if they have an adapter that needs to be replaced by following the instructions on Apple’s website. It also includes plug adapters sold in the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit, so you might want to check if yours are affected on Apple’s site, here. Its recall comes over a week after Microsoft also issued a recall for AC power cords shipped with Surface tablets.
Note that other wall plug adapters, such as those intended for use in the USA, U.K., China, and Japan – as well as Apple’s USB power adapters – are not affected by this issue.
Customers should visit apple.com for details about how to exchange the affected adapters for new, redesigned ones.
To receive a free replacement power adapter, you must first locate the device serial number of your iPhone, iPod, or Mac to determine if you’re affected by the recall.
