Apple reportedly working on advanced wireless charging for iPhone 7S
Apple is actively working on a wireless charging method for future iPhones, according to “people familiar with the plans”speaking to Bloomberg Business”.
In the face of analyst claims that we’ve finally reached peak iPhone, Apple’s interest in exploring new and innovative mobile technologies remains as vibrant as ever.
Using an inductive charging mat, or magnetic charging cable with the Apple Watch, still requires physical contact between the device being charged and the charger, which remains wired. In 2010, the company applied for a patent which described a concept of using the iMac personal computer to charge other products from a distance of about one meter. For example, the largest issue with this sort of technology is the loss of power over longer distances. True, there’s no wire running between your phone and a charging mat, so it’s technically wireless, but your device is still anchored to a fixed location. One reason is that multiple incompatible standards mean a particular charging mat won’t necessarily work with your device. If Apple can find a way to allow users to charge their iOS devices more conveniently, it could result in a very compelling new feature.
Apple already started making units of the iPhone 5se, the rumored 4-inch iPhone expected to debut in March, way back at the beginning of previous year, according to Japanese tech site Nikkei (via AppleInsider).
iPhones and iPads account for over three quarters of revenue for the company. Some of Samsung’s newer phones, such as the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+, support high-speed wireless charging. These sources say that the tech could be implemented in the 2017 updates for the iPhone and iPad line.
