Apple’s Macos High Sierra: Faster Safari And A New File System
The macOS High Sierra is available starting today for beta developers while a stable version will be available later this month. That means this already well developed platform will be bringing all its cool VR experiences to Macs.
If you’re wondering how the hell you’re going to run VR games on your Mac computer, Apple made several other announcements that will make that easier for consumers and developers.
The default file system will be the Apple File System (APFS) which was announced previous year. Apple touts that Safari is the fastest and most robust browser until date, even faster than the most popular Chrome browser.
That said, there are a number of great reasons to try the macOS High Sierra beta on your Mac. For instance, Safari will now automatically block the autoplay videos when you open the website and it will also come equipped with an AI-based “Intelligent Tracking Prevention” which will block the ad trackers across sites.
On Monday, the first day of Apple’s five-day annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2017 held in San Jose, California, the US consumer electronics giant said that it is embracing VR development by demonstrating its efforts on the HTC Vive, the first VR headset launched by the Taiwanese firm. However Apple later killed off the app back in 2015 in favor of Photos, which we guess was Apple’s way of streamlining photo storage, organization, and editing into a single application. It will also allow for a “Split View” option for email, and improved management options for imported files, such as category search and facial recognition.
New edit tools have also been added, including a new curves control for fine-tuning the color of your image.
Not all features in MacOS High Sierra will work on older hardware. Apple has launched a new graphics API for developers, called Metal 2.
Metal for VR is also coming to High Sierra, Federighi said, for VR app development. It will provide support for external graphics units via a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure, but the most exciting part – and another key theme of the evening – was the support for VR content, via a new partnership with SteamVR, Unreal 4 engine and Unity.
