Apple’s Mobile Ad Blocking Raises More Questions Than Answers
It is unlikely that Apple will do this as it would sour its relationship with Arment for what would amount to pennies for them, as Arment was one of the first developers on the App Store and is a minor celebrity within the tech world for his past achievements, which includes creating Overcast, a podcasting app. Which makes it odd that Apple released it for those devices in the first place, and while we have no idea why they decided to do that, it’s a fact that users will have to get used to at this point.
Peace rose to the top of the App Store charts with the debut of iOS 9 and this transition comes as unexpected to many users and customers.
“When ad blockers became the most downloaded apps in the App Store, it forced publishers and advertisers to rethink the role that advertising plays on the web”, said David Carroll, an associate professor of media design at the Parsons School of Design. “Ad blockers come with an important asterisk: while they do benefit a ton of people in major ways, they also hurt some, including many who don’t deserve the hit”. A year ago, The Awl was manually hand-rolling the bulk of its native ad campaigns through its CMS, meaning they were treated just like any other article and thus couldn’t be blocked.
Bottom line: The sky isn’t falling-no matter what are Apple’s ambitions against Google or what fear-mongering marauders say across the InterWebs about mobile ad blocking bankrupting publishers.
The reasons for using ad blockers are many: Some ads carry cookies that track users and create privacy concerns, some ads contain badly written code that can slow web page loading to a crawl. This has triggered a backlash against these apps, since many small content publishers-including yours truly-rely on the revenue from web ads to stay in business. Still, it would be good to have a plan. To help you navigate around iOS 9, we’ve listed all the tricks that it can do that were beyond the capabilities of iOS 8.
Arment declared that “achieving this much success with Peace just doesn’t feel good”.
Feed readers were never widely popular, though – they remain the domain of news junkies and other power users. Multiple content blockers can be installed and operational at the same time, and individually disabled on an application level through the Safari settings widget. Apple uses a closed hardware and software ecosystem to lock in users, so booting Google out of that walled garden makes ideal business sense. As a result, all Google can do is pay ad blocking companies to whitelist ads.
Arment goes on to talk about how indiscriminate ad blocking is too much of an umbrella punishment, but stops short of condemning ad blocking altogether.
Ad blockers for iPhone on iTunes. The Post has trialled messages to people using ad-blocking software asking them to either turn them off or provide details such as email addresses.
It is kind of interesting to see the ad blocking industry taking what seems to be the high-minded approach to obliterating advertising for iOS9 phones and the Internet in general. The former won’t work, because Safari content-blocking filters have to be assembled before pages are loaded, and can’t be queried live.
It will serve, in essence, as a modern take on the feed reader, providing a standardised interface to the latest content from news and other online publishers.
