Apple seeks developers for new ‘Planet of the Apps’ TV show
App development may not seem like the most exciting topic to build a reality show around, but that’s not stopping Apple.
The Cupertino tech giant just put out an open casting call for its first original TV series, dubbed Planet of the Apps.
Apple is accepting applications for the show until August 26, and is asking for video submissions (you’ll be on TV, after all).
Planet of the Apps team members will also be visiting San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Austin to search for tech talent in person.
But if you’re accepted to appear on the show, Planet of the Apps will pay the $99 fee so you can enroll in the program and distribute your app.
Ben Silverman, chairman of Electus, and Howard Owens, founder and co-CEO of Propagate, will team with hip-hop artist will.i.am to produce the show.
Join the PC World newsletter! The app creators should also have their app in beta (on iOS, watchOS, tvOS, or macOS) ready before the October 21 deadline, in order to be eligible for the first Apple series. Of the developers to be showcased, Silverman says, “We can really tell their stories as we explore how apps are developed and created and incubated”, says Silverman.
Only 100 of the “world’s most talented app creators” will be selected to take part in the show, and winning apps will be featured in the App Store at the end.
The interested developers should visit the series website, planetoftheapps.com, to apply and more information. Dates will be released on the Planet of the Apps website shortly.
It’s unclear when the show will air, or even where, but given the success of these types of shows, the fact that apps are involved, and that Apple is the creative force behind it, we imagine it will be a hit.
