Arby’s Thanks Jon Stewart “For Being a Friend” After Years of Insults
In the history of television, there have been programs that delved as deeply and perceptively into the issues of the day as Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show“.
Over the course of his show, Stewart interviewed sitting presidents, authors, actors and activists while commenting on current events. I live in hope. Quick to poke fun at politicians, newsmakers and authors, Stewart also made the news media a frequent target of his barbs. I say this not of the classical definitions of tragedy and comedy (though it is true there, too), but of the nearly implicit assumption that something that makes an adult cry is somehow nobler than something that makes us laugh. Stephen Colbert, Ed Helms, Samantha Bee, Steve Carell and John Oliver are among the best known alumni of “The Daily Show“.
Though his political persuasion is liberal, his bashing was not always partisan.
“I feel like what we’ve built here is a monument to evisceration”, he said, adding, “If you’re still walking around with a belly full of viscera, know this: we didn’t forget you”. And the brand created two videos to pay tribute to the outgoing Daily Show host, both of which are set to air during Stewart’s penultimate episode on Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Black South African Trevor Noah, heir to the anchor’s chair of “The Daily Show“, stepped in to defend Stewart, and characterized the fight as “exactly what the writers room is for”.
