Are the Houston Texans Preparing to Welcome Tony Romo?
What I do know is that I hope we don’t let it get to that point with our current crop of young, talented players. And Moneyball is the culprit.
“We’re really excited to acquire a second-round draft choice in this trade”, said Sashi Brown, Cleveland’s executive vice president of football operations. In this case, the comparison is very valid. Houston wanted to get rid of Osweiler so badly that they were willing to part with a premium draft pick as well. They won’t trade 4 him. Obviously, it was a pretty massive deal, due to the fact that this was essentially just the Browns taking on a big contract so the Texans could free up salary cap space.
On Thursday, the Browns acquired the quarterback in a trade with the Houston Texans, along with a 2018 second-round pick and a 2017 sixth-rounder (No. 188). Now the Browns will release Griffin on the same day that Kirk Cousins signs his franchise tag for ~$24 million. Cabot’s report all but confirms that Osweiler will never play a down in Cleveland. The Texans did not back Osweiler when the off-season arrived and Bob McNair, Rick Smith, and Bill O’Brien all deflected the questions on Osweiler’s future and whether he was set to be the starter in 2017.
Whoever suits up at quarterback for the Browns next season will be playing behind a better line.
The Browns are now stuck with Osweiler and the massive contract he signed as a free agent last season.
The issue, though, went a little deeper than that. When Griffin was concussed in the preseason of the 2015, after the Redskins exercised a 5th year option that would have paid him $16.1 million, he lost his job permanently.
Perhaps his next team will have a better plan for him than the Texans did.
According to Schefter, the move will open up $10 million in salary-cap space and save $16 million in cash for the Texans.
This is the reason why the Texans are believed to be targeting Romo. But if the team’s financial flexibility were to shrink, so would the chances of actually landing Romo or any other big-ticket item at the game’s most important position. The Browns, to their credit, saw opportunity. Not because Cleveland is the only team interested, but because no one, and I mean no one, can come close to what the Browns are capable of offering and thus the rest of the league has conceded. It confirms that he may have more value than originally thought and the Broncos could get something decent in return if they decide to go that route.
