Area cancer doctor sentenced to 45 years in prison for ‘horrific
Dr. Farid Fata was sentenced to 45 years for misdiagnosing patients with cancer to claim millions in insurance money, Medicare fraud, and two counts of money laundering. When the sentence was given, they were disappointed. When Karadsheh learned that a different oncologist in the practice was quitting, he said the doctor told him it was because Fata was administering chemotherapy to patients who didn’t need it. “I failed”. Geisinger said Dr. Fata worked for them from 2000 to 2003. Fata apologized to his victims with tears, saying he was “ashamed of his actions”. His list of crimes included breaking the trust of over 550 patients, and racking up over $17 million from fake billing statements. “I pray for redemption”.
He asked Borman for mercy. “They came to me seeking compassion and care. Yes, I failed”. That patient later died from his head injury.
We have never seen anything like this before, the prosecutor said.
It wasn’t until a whistleblower fellow doctor – actually an employee of Fata’s – uncovered the scam that the wheels of justice began to turn. “I’m glad he’s incarcerated, but I don’t feel good about the verdict”.
“I was hoping for over 50, but it is what it is”, she said.
“Obviously with a cancer diagnosis, there are many variables and I don’t think you’re ever able to 100 percent count on something, but when the treatment starts to do more damage than the disease process, it’s a problem”.
“My heart just dropped”, he said. “He’ll probably live longer than me”, he added, according to The Detroit News. And you use them in some one who has cancer because they will kill the cancer cells.
“My suspicion was this is not the only case”, Dr. Soe Maunglay told The Detroit News. According to court reporters, Fata stood next to his lawyer, and appeared to be crying.
Fata has 14 days to appeal.
Defense attorney Christopher Andreoff described Fata, a native of Lebanon, as a broken man without family after his wife and children left the United States while the case was pending. “So it is hard to quantity the amount of harm that happens in a case like this”, she said. The operation had seven offices in the Detroit area and a related business that did tests for cancer. Doctors originally told Sydney, diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, to enjoy his last four to six months with his family. “Dr. Fata not only defrauded the government out of millions of dollars, but he lied to his patients about their health and intentionally put their lives at risk”.
He administered “stunning” doses of Rituximab – a strong and expensive drug – to his patients, thus exposing them to life threatening conditions, the court heard.
Forty lawsuits against Fata are pending in Oakland County Circuit Court. I misused my talents. and permitted this sin to enter me because of power and greed. Yes, I have accepted responsibility and admitted I am wrong.
