Area weather: Wet weather through Saturday
The storms carry a risk for large hail and damaging winds, the weather service said in its outlook.
An upper level low pressure system moves east through the Cascades as it swirls with rain showers through Saturday, according to the service’s online forecast discussion.
No watches or warnings have been issued for Luzerne or Lackawanna counties. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
Today: Sunny, with a high near 76.
Saturday night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m., low around 60. Mostly clear skies will follow into tonight, with a low around 49. “Some of these thunderstorms may become strong to severe…capable of producing damaging wind gusts and hail”. Up to a quarter of an inch of rainfall is possible, but more could fall in any potential thunderstorms.
In a statement issued late Friday afternoon, the weather agency warned that a series of strong to severe thunderstorms had developed over Wisconsin and are expected to trickle into Southern Ontario.
The Storm Prediction Center has put almost all of Upstate New York in the “slight” category for severe thunderstorms. The low will be around 63.
With increasing clouds on Saturday afternoon, Sunday looks like the pick of the weekend with mostly sunny skies. The high will be near 76.
Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 78.
