Argentina and Mexico eliminated at men’s soccer tournament
Manchester City new boy Gabriel Jesus was on target as Brazil reached the quarter-finals of the Olympic football tournament in Rio with a 4-0 rout of Denmark.
The final two teams to enter the knock-out stages of the Men’s Soccer tournament battled it out in Group A’s final round of matches.
Barcelona’s Neymar also played better on Wednesday.
As it turns out, Brazil has not forgotten how to play soccer.
His Barcelona teammate Neymar, has had to handle a similar level of stress by being the poster boy for both the 2014 World Cup and the Olympics now taking place in Rio de Janeiro.
Brazil’s Gabriel Jesus reacts during a group A match of the men’ s Olympic football tournament between Brazil and Denmark in Salvador, Brazil, Wednesday Aug. 10, 2016. Two of Colombia’s over-age players scored the goals – Teofilo Gutierrez getting the first after four minutes and Dorlan Pabon doubling their advantage from the penalty spot after 63 minutes.
But it was Gabriel Barbosa who broke the deadlock on 26 minutes after Gabriel Jesus did the spadework on the left.
During the second minute of stoppage time, Brazilian midfielder Renato Augusto nearly became the hero for the hosts as William saw him unmarked in the 18-yard box.
Micale, however, insisted that people must ease the pressure on a forward destined for greatness.
However, he shone in a supporting role for Brazil’s other attacking starlets to get the goals.
And his coach has warned the superstar could follow the same path as Messi if he continues to be disrespected by the Brazilian supporters. They had three-quarters of possession then, but still no goals.
Neymar was at the heart of the third five minutes after the break when his through-ball caught the Denmark defence square and Santos crossed once more for Luan to slot home.
However, a rallying, emphatic performance saw Brazil score two goals in either half to hand them all three points, guaranteeing them safe passage into the last eight. Neymar chipped the ball perfectly into the path of Douglas Santon who rolled the ball across for Luan to tap home.
And although his centre was pushed out by Hojbjerg, Barbosa was on hand to rifle home his second goal of the game. Rodrigo Caio had a shot saved in the 14th minute.
