Arizonans take part in televised Obama gun control town-hall event
When Colorado rape victim Kimberly Corban said that owning a firearm makes her feel safer, Obama told her there is, “nothing we’re proposing that prevents you or makes it harder for you to purchase a firearm if you need one”.
President Barack Obama fielded tough questions from gun owners at a televised town hall on Thursday, defending his move to tighten gun rules as he sought to elevate the issue of gun control before the November 2016 election to replace him.
Obama seemed surprised to be challenged on that particular point.
The town hall presented a rare opportunity for the president to address the nation, be confronted by critics and tackle rumors in an informal setting.
Washington (CNN)President Barack Obama confronted his skeptics – and the limits of his own authority – on live television Thursday night.
Ted Cruz responded to the president’s executive actions with a Web page showing a scowling Obama in a helmet, looking like a jackbooted thug staging a home invasion, with the warning, “Obama wants your guns”. Part of the president’s anger, he made clear, was reserved for forces like the National Rifle Association, which has crusaded against the administration’s gun safety measures. “And as soon as my credit card application is approved, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing”, he said.
The gun-rights movement emerged from the anti-government fringes in the 1960s and ’70s, took over the NRA and raised huge sums to impose its agenda on USA lawmakers. “They’re just down the street”, Obama said, referring to the group’s nearby headquarters. More recent data showed Americans backed Obama’s intiatives but didn’t believe they would work.
The individual right to bear arms is only a few years old, and based on nothing; its fall could be as quick as its rise. President Barack Obama, right, walks over to greet Taya Kyle, left, widow of U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, during a commercial break at a CNN televised town hall meeting at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., Thur… Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Obama’s plans “trample on the Second Amendment”.
Obama renewed his push for gun regulations following a spree of mass shootings previous year, including a one orchestrated by a radicalized Muslim couple in San Bernardino, California, in December in which 14 people died. That’s because gun manufacturers have a stake in developing such guns before someone figures out how to apply the Seventh Amendment to them.
But that’s how the NRA gets the wackos stirred up, by saying Obama wants to come to your door and take your guns away.
He blamed the idea on the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other gun groups which he claimed convince their members “somebody’s going to come grab your guns”.
After Obama dismissed the confiscation shibboleth as a conspiracy, Cooper asked, “Is it fair to call it a conspiracy?” “Each time this comes up, we are fed the excuse that common-sense reforms like background checks might not have stopped the last massacre, or the one before that, or the one before that, so why bother trying”, Obama said. “I ain’t going to see her graduation, prom. Because I believe that’s the case, you know, often in Chicago, and possibly the source of the gun that shot and murdered my daughter”, Pendleton said, according to a CNN transcript.
But on gun control, he can’t even pick a fight. Chicago’s Father Michael Pfleger wondered aloud-more than asked-why it was that we can’t “title guns like cars”?
White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday that the White House “consulted” with CNN for the event, but the network’s journalists will “decide exactly who attends and who gets called on”.
