Arkansas’ Bret Bielema debates butt kicking with Texas Tech’s Kliff
His direct quote from the coaches conference is now national news because Kingsbury brought it up in the post-game press conference after the Red Raiders beat Bielema’s Arkansas Razorbacks.
To refresh, Kingsbury took exception to what Bielema said during a Texas High School coaches convention this summer. But as to whether his remarks stiffen anyone in Fayetteville’s resolve, no. The losses themselves have done enough of that, the coaching staff said.
“I’m happy he got to vent and hopefully he feels a lot better”, Bielema said of Kingsbury.
Kingsbury and Bielema are 1-1 against each other all-time as head coaches, but don’t expect the two to exchange any phone calls soon regarding re-scheduling.
The coach most outspoken against Bret Bielema and his “the old way was better” approach was Kingsbury, who said the claims about hurry up offenses were “ridiculous”. She never really elaborated. “I’m not a big reader of the Internet or anything of that nature”. Bielema’s response? Just going by what the two-point conversion math dictates. Kingsbury credits coach Mike Leach for having the faith in him to open up the offense.
“I’ve seen spread offenses be soft”.
When Long was asked about Bielema specifically by the media, Long said “He is who is he”.
Only Kingsbury knows how personally he and his father actually took Bielema’s comments from the summer, but in actuality, those comments had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. But the Longhorns have apparently found a quarterback.
The Razorbacks are led by quarterback Brandon Allen, the SEC’s leading passer with 916 yards through three games.
“Several HS coaches have reached out to me this AM in support of Kliff saying what he did last night”, tweeted coaching website FootballScoop.
As it turns out, the Red Raiders play host to the Horned Frogs at home on Saturday. TCU has already lost almost half its starting defense to injuries, and Tech is unbeaten.
“If that was an ass-kicking, I’d love to see what a year ago was”, Bielema said. “They’re completely different”. Anybody that’s been involved with me in the past is going to know what I stand for and what I represent, especially when we have their student-athletes.
Needless to say, Kingsbury’s comments got a major firestorm, and the events turned into a much larger story.
Kansas State place-kicker Jack Cantele, who hit all four of his field-goal tries, including a 44-yarder to send the Wildcats’ eventual 39-33 victory to a third OT, was selected special teams player of the week. His presence violated NCAA rules that say coaches can not scout an opposing team in person during the season.
