Arkansas Releases Intense “Keep The Boot” Hype Video For LSU Game
The Tide have been anything but dead since. The insane thing is that it’s not been the defense or even the run game that’s elevated this team. Credit: AP Photo/John BazemoreAn Alabama fan watches teams warm up before the start of an NCAA college football game between the Alabama and the LSU, Saturday, November 7, 2015, in Tuscaloosa, Ala.The two running backs squared off last Saturday in the biggest game in college football so far this season. Three of those four players mentioned have won the Heisman Trophy, and the other one is arguably the best quarterback to ever play the game.
To be sure, Alabama was aided by the traditionally hard-headed play-calling of LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, who is notorious for refusing to adapt his traditional pro-style offense to a more spread-based system, which would surely have been more helpful to both Harris and Fournette against the vaunted Tide defense. He finished with just 31 yards on 19 carries but did manage a touchdown in the fourth quarter. He still averages 172.9 yards and has scored 16 touchdowns, but will need to bounce back strong to remain in contention for college football’s most prestigious individual award.
But those figures barely illuminate Alabama’s dominant performance. And on just one carry did Fournette make it three yards past the line of scrimmage without being touched. This is going to be a low scoring game but Alabama is going to win by at least a touchdown because Lane has finally figured out TO GIVE DERRKICK HENRY THE GOT DANG FOOBAW. Offensively we couldn’t quite get it done. Prior to their game against Alabama, the Tigers had rolled up a whopping 6.7 yards per rushing attempt, good for third in the nation. According to numberFire’s efficiency statistics, the Tigers were second in the country at 6.26 adjusted yards per rush. In terms of sheer volume, LSU had the FBS’ fifth best rushing attack at 309 yards per game. The Hogs are 12th in the SEC and 80th in the nation in total defense with 413 yards given up a game.
Teams playing the week after facing Alabama this season have not found the next game easy pickings. We just have to come off the ball and put hands on him.
Ross Dellenger of The Advocate turned up similar findings in his analysis. LSU ran for 39 yards on 27 carries and attempted just 17 passes in a 21-0 loss. Playing seven defenders against seven blockers- and a very good run protection unit at that- is a very risky proposition. Next stop for the Tigers, barring an upset, will be the College Football Playoff.
Other advanced metrics systems agree. Connelly’s S&P+ rankings has the Tide second in overall defense and their rush defense ranked first.
Every single play, regardless if it was one of one of Alabama’s future first round picks, like middle linebacker Reggie Ragland or defensive end A’Shawn Robinson, or one of their plethora of talented backups, everyone in the Crimson Tide’s front seven stepped up on every play.
I had written last week that LSU-Alabama might be an underappreciated rivalry in terms of its competitive centrality in college football. MSU lost 25-20. This year, Alabama is ranked second in the country as it comes to Starkville.
Mississippi State’s quarterback holds 36 school records.
De’Runnya Wilson caught eight passes for 91 yards against Alabama previous year.
“Everybody’s got to focus and get prepared to do the best job to play even better in (the Mississippi State) game”, Saban said. The Bulldogs brought a No. 1 ranking into Bryant-Denny Stadium and were an obvious obstacle to everything Alabama wanted to accomplish.
The two meet again Saturday with Wilson coming off a 100-yard receiving game against Missouri. WVU has not looked great, with four losses, but their losses are to consensus top-15 teams: Oklahoma, Okie State, TCU, and Baylor: all back-to-back. It doesn’t come up with a ton of turnovers, and it rarely gets penalized, getting nailed a mere four times per game.
