Arkansas State University on lockdown
Arkansas State University reported a man with a weapon on campus on Thursday.
Jonesboro Police say 47 year old Brad Kenneth Bartelt drove on to the campus in a green Chevy truck, doused himself in gasoline, and pointed a gun at his chin. No one was injured and shots were not fired in the incident.
In a news conference hours after the incident, the police chief said his department had been notified that Bartelt had posted on Facebook that he was homicidal and suicidal and referred to an incident with the Social Security Administration. The driver “cut doughnuts” on the grass, then drove to the building’s doors on the east side.
School and police officials said Bartelt had attended an ASU branch campus at Newport.
It said the the shooter had been spotted inside the university, near its student union building.
An armed man drove into the campus grounds, forcing the school into lockdown.
Police locked down the Jonesboro campus, and negotiators from the city Police Department’s SWAT team talked Bartelt into surrendering at 2:46 p.m., Jonesboro police spokesman Paul Holmes said.
Campus is closed for the rest of the day, according to the university.
However, when officers arrived they found Bartelt was already receiving medical treatment. The first call of the incident happened around 1:32 Thursday afternoon. The suspect was captured with no reported injuries or shots fired.
The armed gunman is now in custody after putting Arkansas State University on lockdown.
Police confirmed to KATV that the shooter remains in his vehicle, surrounded by police, possibly with a shotgun.
ASU is located about 130 miles northeast of Little Rock.
