Army falls 21-17 to Navy for 14th straight loss in series
One of the most famous matchups was in 1944 between the schools – the 46th Army Navy game.
Army’s 10th touchdown reception of the season – a 39-yard, over-the-shoulder catch by Poe – provided the Black Knights with the 17-14 lead with 2:08 left in the second quarter. Niumatalolo explained why he announced his potential interest ahead of the Army-Navy Game.
Keenan Reynolds rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another score as Navy beat Army 21-17, extending its winning streak in their rivalry to 14 games. They got inside the redzone, but a great play by Daiquan Thomasson on 3 and 5 forced Army to settle for a 32 yard field goal to go up 3-0.
A three-touchdown favorite, Navy had it tougher than usual in one of the most storied rivalries in college sports. On Army’s next drive, Carter fumbled away the snap at the Navy 33-yard line. Navy has won the last 13 games and Army is looking to win this game for the first time since 2001 when they played ta Veterans Stadium. The game is not likely to get out of hand, but the Navy defense can keep Army from putting a lot of points on the board while, Navy led by Reynolds has been able to score at will on everyone they have faced this year. Army QB Chris Carter completed 9-of-15 passes for 208 yards and a score with a pick, but was held to 18 yards on 22 carries.
I may have backed Navy more than any other team this college football season, and have nearly always been rewarded. Army’s defense stiffened, especially in the second half.
Carter, whose first start came in a loss to Rutgers the last time Army took the field, gave his team’s offensive attack a rare aerial dimension, completing four passes, all to Poe, totaling 91 yards.
What’s next? For Navy, it’s a date with Pitt in the Military Bowl, which will take place on December 28 at 2:30 p.m. It’s essentially a home game for the Midshipmen.
In the first quarter, Reynolds scored his 85th career rushing touchdown, breaking the FBS and FCS overall record for any player. The Midshipmen quarterback broke the NCAA record for career rushing touchdowns and has continued to dominate in Niumatalolo’s triple option offense with 83 rushing touchdowns in four seasons.
Niumatalolo has been the head coach at Navy since 2007. Early in the fourth, Army twice moved deep into Navy territory, but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. “This is going to be an officer in the Navy protecting you and I, protecting us from the bad guys, who had an outstanding football career”.
“I want to pay respect to coach Monken and Army, ” said Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo, who is expected to announce soon that he is taking the BYU head coaching position.
