Army football takes field with American and French flag
Army Football showed their support for victims of Friday’s terrorists attacks in Paris by carrying the French Flag onto the field Saturday.
Both teams are 2-7, but Tulane is riding a five-game losing steak and could muster only a field goal last week in a 7-3 loss to CT.
Gus Kattengell shared the video of the Black Knights storming out onto the field in West Point, NY with the American and French flags in tow and it was a touching and classy gesture.
“I had faith in him”, said quarterback Tanner Lee, who had two touchdowns on 252 passing yards.
Army will be a 2.5-point favorite in a game where points may be hard to come by: The Black Knights rank 105th in the nation in scoring offense (21.8 points per game), 18 spots better than Tulane (16.3 ppg). For teams that hadn’t won very many games, it was a pretty clean, hard-fought game.
“I just thought we had a few open opportunities and, to my disappointment, the kids just didn’t catch a lot of balls, ” Tulane coach Curtis Johnson said. “It was one of those drives that will allow him to mature more and propel him into the future”, Johnson said.
Teddy Veal had 123 receiving yards and a touchdown and Dontrell Hilliard added 91 rushing for the Green Wave (3-7, 1-5 American Athletic Conference), which notched its first road win.
Army did not let up, though, as it scored a quick 14 points to cut things close before the end of the half.
The French flag was carried onto the turf by Caleb McNeill, a defensive back for the Black Knights. But the Green Wave set Andrew DiRocco up with a chance to be the hero if he made a 35-yard field goal with four seconds left.
Tulane took advantage when Lee – facing 3rd-and-10 from the 10 – connected with Veal deep who then outran two pursuers for a 90-yard touchdown pass. On Tulane’s next drive, Army’s Kenneth Brinson blocked a punt and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown to make it a 28-21 ballgame at the intermission. That game time and network will be announced later today, Monday.
