Army to cut 40,000 troops; announcements coming soon
Under the plan, the Army would have 450,000 soldiers by the end of the 2017 budget year.
The paper quoted a document it had obtained and said the cuts are being made to save money.
The Army plans to cut 40,000 soldiers from its posts across the country over the next two years, according to a U.S. Today report.
These cuts will affect almost all of its domestic and foreign posts, the newspaper reported today, and an additional 17,000 Army civilian employees would be laid off under the plan.
Army officials said, spending cuts aside, they had planned to cut forces as USA involvement decreased in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
According to the Pentagon’s budget, released in February, the cut to 450,000 troops was envisioned to take effect on September 30, 2018.
Since the expansion, the Army has already discharged 80,000 soldiers, but the newly planned cuts could affect the future of Army bases across the United States, such as Fort Drum in New York or Fort Benning in Georgia.
“One person who’s going to be very pleased with this is Vladimir Putin”, said Senator Dan Sullivan, a Republican from Alaska.

“This is a long-term campaign”. Moreover, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno recently told CBS “This Morning” that even shipping over 150,000 US troops wouldn’t accomplish much.
There are also U.S. troops being used to train Syrian rebels against IS, but it was revealed on Tuesday that only 60 Syrians are in training.
