Aroldis Chapman gets traded to the Cubs
On Monday, the Cubs acquired closer Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees as part of a five-player trade.
Chapman and Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo also got into a heated argument in the ninth inning of a July 2014 game, but Rizzo said last month he was fine with the idea of acquiring the reliever as Chicago tries to reach the World Series, which it hasn’t won since 1908.
In acquiring the man who has regularly hit the radar gun at 100-plus miles per hour this season, the Cubs are hoping to bolster a bullpen that already includes closer Hector Rondon and setup men Pedro Strop, Carl Edwards Jr. and Mike Montgomery.
But Chapman is eligible for free agency after this season, NY also has All-Stars Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances in the bullpen, and its haul included top shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres, versatile pitcher Adam Warren and minor league outfielders Billy McKinney and Rashad Crawford. The woman later changed her story and no charges were filed. But, a rental is good enough for now as the Cubs are all in for the World Series this year.
With lefty-batting sluggers Bryce Harper of Washington and Brandon Belt of San Francisco possibly looming in the playoffs, the addition of Chapman gives Cubs manager Joe Maddon one of the majors’ top assets when in need of a late strikeout. “My family, this team and Major League Baseball take the issue of domestic violence very seriously and support efforts to reduce domestic violence through education, awareness and intervention”.
Although it was an easy decision on the baseball side, Ricketts said, he also understood people’s concerns. “Looking back, I feel I have learned from this matter and have grown as a person. It happened and it was real”, Epstein said.
“There was genuine sorrow, regret”, Epstein said before Monday night’s 5-4 loss to the White Sox.
“I could see how some people look at the situation, but (Chapman has) gone through the process, he’s respected the process, said and done the right things”, Ricketts said.
According to a report by Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News on Monday, the Yankees have turned their attention towards moving right-hander Ivan Nova.
Gleyber Torres, a shortstop and number 1 prospect of the Cubs is the main prize in the deal for the Yankees.
As you know, earlier this year I accepted and served a 30-game suspension from Major League Baseball resulting from my actions of October 30, 2015.
