Around the Big Ten Week 12: Michigan State upsets Ohio State, puts
Most recently, in 2011, OSU lost at home to Penn State 20-14, then was defeated at MI 40-34 during Luke Fickell’s lone season as head coach.
For the Buckeyes, it could also make it scary.
After Saturday’s game, Elliott complained about his lack of carries and said there was “no chance” he would return to Ohio State after 2015.
Ohio State finished with just 132 total yards and five first downs. “I don’t know if we are going to get to that level with (Meyer) and (Harbaugh), but it’s going to be different”. Kid wanted the ball, I get that.
“Zeke is a very honest guy”, Meyer said.
Meyer said Elliott apologized to him.
“Our downhill run game with tempo is something we’re good at, but it’s not something you can do all the time”, he said. “I just want to do everything I possibly can to help us win, and when I do something like (jumping offsides) to negatively affect our team, it hurts a lot”.
“They asked me to do media and I wouldn’t do it, because I was frustrated too. I remember hearing, ‘They just don’t have the personnel, ‘ and I’m thinking, ‘Wait a minute, they have great personnel.’ They always have great personnel”, he said.
“I have given nothing but blood, sweat and tears for this university and team ever since I stepped on campus in Columbus and have always put the team before myself”.
Because when the Buckeyes travel to Ann Arbor for the MI game on Saturday, it will get the chance to play in front of prospects they’re recruiting on the road, something that hasn’t happened much during the Meyer era.
“That’s my style of football, I love that”, Pendleton said.
Britain Covey, Utah’s leading receiver, suffered a leg injury in Saturday’s loss to UCLA and will sit out this week’s season finale against Colorado.
For Michigan State, it’s win and you’re in.
The play-calling was baffling, of course, and everybody knows it, as the Buckeyes went ultra-conservative and refused to challenge Michigan State downfield, letting the Spartans’ talented defensive line dictate the flow of the game. “It was fine. He wasn’t wrong [after the game] as Urban said”.
They had won 23 consecutive games, including the national championship. But there’s a synch and flow that’s showed up precious few times.
Meyer said he will be more involved in decision-making this week that is normally handled by offensive coordinator Ed Warinner and quarterbacks coach Tim Beck. “There’s a variety of things”.
The Buckeyes still have an outside shot to land a berth in the Big Ten championship game, but they must beat the Wolverines and hope that Penn State upsets Michigan State in East Lansing. And this is after such a dismal and unimaginative offensive performance on Saturday that even Jim Tressel probably changed the channel. Still, Meyer added that the timing of Elliott’s comments were an issue. Ohio State lost to Michigan State and the weather was bad.
Now, barring a sequence of improbable outcomes, Ohio State is done.
Two days later, Ohio State hired Urban Meyer, and the Buckeyes proceeded to reel off a 48-4 record-including three wins over the Wolverines-in the next three-plus seasons. They had strong leadership and bonded around each other after the season-ending injury to Barrett and the tragic death of walk-on lineman Kosta Karageorge.
Once again, Ohio State barely used the talents on H-back Braxton Miller, one of the most dynamic players in college football.
