Arrest made in Chicago killing of Tyshawn Lee

But over time, McCarthy said, forensic evidence, witness identification and information developed from community members helped lead the police to the suspects. Police trust he was one of three individuals included in the young man’s execution-style shooting in Chicago prior this month.

Chicago was called the murder capital of the United States after it registered 503 homicides in 2012, more than any other city.

Edwards is on the run, according to investigators, who said he is somewhere in the Chicago area.

“We’re going to go in and destroy that gang”, he said.

McCarthy added that the crime was so heinous Edwards is “better off if we catch him than someone else”.

The concern was that if McCarthy’s words were not more than tough talk, the gang problem would remain.

The arrest was announced on the same day that activists protested over the shooting death of a black teenager by a white Chicago patrolman in October 2014 that was filmed on a police dashboard camera. “This was very clearly not a case of “no-snitching” but there was a lot of fear”.

Court documents paint a disturbing picture of the planned attack, explaining that Morgan and his accomplices allegedly saw Tyshawn playing on the swings in a playlot with his basketball beside him.

“I don’t think it is an easy solution to anything, I don’t, and I think those were poorly chosen words at a time where the police are already under scrutiny for excessive force”, said Shareen McClure.
