Arrested Critical Mass cyclist defended by his mother
Ian Hespelt, 39, was arrested Saturday night outside At&T Park, where a Billy Joel concert was taking place.
The mother of a man accused of smashing a vehicle window during a Critical Mass bike ride last month in San Francisco called the episode “very disheartening”, but said there is more to the story than was captured in a widely publicized video of the attack.
Officers on patrol Saturday near the intersection of Third Street and Terry Francois Boulevard saw a person on a bicycle matching the description of the suspect in the video, according to police.
It was not immediately known if Hespelt is being represented by an attorney.
Ian Hespelt, 39, was arrested on suspicion of four felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, stemming from an August. 28 attack during a Critical Mass bike ride.
The video of the incident shows bicyclists cross Marina Boulevard into oncoming traffic directly into the path of a dark blue vehicle.
A cyclist, who is suspected as being Hespelt, is seen getting angry with a zipcar after stopping and blocking traffic.
The vehicle sustained about $2,000 in damage, police said. Police usually wouldn’t investigate a case without a victim, but due to the attention this incident is garnering from te publication of the youtube video officers were compelled to investigate.
When she tries to get away from the group again, her vehicle is beaten on and a male cyclist appears to hit the driver side window of the auto with a U-lock several times.
