Arrested In Connection To Minnesota Black Lives Matters Protest Shooting
Black Lives Matter protesters say white supremacists cruise by, shoot video and scope out the crowds.
Meanwhile, two other men, both white, turned themselves in Tuesday afternoon and are being questioned, police said in a statement.
Community members and Black Lives Matter activists had gathered for a ninth night of peaceful protest over the police-shooting death of 24-year-old Jamar Clark, camping outside a Minneapolis precinct, when they were joined by a group of familiar masked hecklers on Monday night.
Steven Belton, interim president of the Minneapolis Urban League, echoed those sentiments, saying protesters had achieved most of what they wanted.
The situation escalated Monday night when members of the protesters’ security team approached three men and one woman who were standing under a “Justice4Jamar” sign and asked what they were doing. Police claim he was interfering with emergency responders who were treating the victim when he was shot. The protest encampment had been set up to protest the November 15 officer-involved shooting death of Jamar Clark.
Kyle Loven, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Minneapolis, said on Tuesday the FBI was aware of the incident, was coordinating with Minneapolis police and would determine whether federal action was appropriate. Wesley Martin said that he was attempting to escort people away and confront the gunmen when he was shot in the leg, US News reported. However, three suspects with unknown ties have been arrested in connection with the shooting with one suspect held and released. One, a 23-year-old man, was arrested in Bloomington. “But in light of tonight’s shootings, the family feels out of imminent concern for the safety of the occupiers, we must get the occupation of the Fourth Precinct ended and onto the next step”.
The shooting, which left five people with injuries that were not-life threatening, followed several racially disparaging comments about the protests that had been posted on social media in recent days.
The shooting that took place as protesters gathered near a Minneapolis police precinct on Monday sent shocks throughout the nation. A warning was issued by the police on Friday, urging protesters to be careful and report any suspicious incidents. Black Lives Matter activists have been camped outside a police precinct on Morgan Ave.
“It’s going to be a space for people to reflect on the one year anniversary of the non indictment of Darren Wilson and reflect what happened this week”, Contreras said.
“At some point during an altercation that ensued between the officers and the individual, an officer discharged his weapon, striking the individual”, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said in a statement.
Authorities say he died in a struggle with police but some witnesses say Clark was handcuffed. Evans said that there is no complete video of the shooting, though investigators have multiple videos that he said are related to the encounter.
The Black Lives Matter chapter called the shooting “white supremacist terrorism”.
Three of the victims went to a hospital by private vehicle, two were taken to another hospital by ambulance.
