Arrested in Shooting of Minneapolis Black Lives Matter Protesters
Oluchi Omeoga witnessed the shooting and said a handful of protesters followed three men in masks to a street corner, where the men pulled out weapons and began firing.
Police said a Hispanic man arrested in his vehicle at midday was not at the shooting scene and was released.
No names have been released, nor will they be, until the suspects are actually charged by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.
The victims of the shooting were all black men ages 19 through 43, and they were taken to hospitals after sustaining noncritical injuries, police said.
Eddie Sutton, Clark’s brother, also issued this statement early Tuesday morning in response to the shootings, saying, “Thank you to the community for the incredible support you have shown for our family in this hard time”.
That’s when “white supremacists” showed up to the rally “in an act of domestic terrorism”, said the local Black Lives Matter group a Facebook post, according to Newsweek.
Numerous protesters outside the 4th Precinct have been there the better part of a week, since the November 15 shooting involving two Minneapolis police officers and Clark, whom they were trying to arrest.
Clark’s funeral is noon Wednesday in a North Minneapolis church.
According to police, Clark was shot after he struggled with officers. Activists claim Clark was handcuffed at the time of the shooting.
Police are still searching for a third suspect, described in an earlier press release as white and male.
Unitarian Universalists have been active in Black Lives Matter Minneapolis from the beginning.
“It’s just a very brief fragment where Mr. Clark and one of the officers are encountering each other, and then they disappear from sight, and there is no other view of them until one of the officers after”, Dayton said.
Law enforcement authorities said there was a scuffle between Clark and the officers, and that Clark reached for an officer’s gun before he was shot in the head. Clark’s family called for an end to the demonstrations out of safety concerns.
They were among scores of people who have demonstrated for more than a week outside a north Minneapolis police precinct in the wake of the death of 23-year-old Jamar Clark.
A witness identified as Dana Jaehnert said one of the men was wearing a mask.
“We are sparing no efforts to bring any and all those responsible to justice”, Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges said on social media.
Around 2:30 p.m., investigators took two additional men into custody after they voluntarily turned themselves in. Wesley Martin was walking with a cane after being hit in the left leg. He said he remembers chasing the masked men, then getting shot and being put in an ambulance.
Activists with the Black Lives Matter movement have said on Twitter that they will not let the shooting scare them away from protesting the against the police. The police are asking that anyone with information to please come forward. Elder didn’t immediately respond to a question about chemical irritant use.
The statement says the department has additional uniformed officers in the area for extra security.
