Arrests made near scene of Milwaukee police shooting
When a crowd of 30 to 40 people gathered there Tuesday night, police asked the crowd to disperse.
Police earlier arrested 10 people for disorderly conduct and resisting officers.
After waiting about 20 minutes, the crowd was again asked to leave.
Some of the crowd became disorderly and resistant and were also arrested, police said.
English said he found the situation was confusing, because he didn’t know the reason for his arrest.
Rep. Jonathan Brostoff was thrown to the ground by cops in Milwaukee on Tuesday night.
He said the officers told him and Jarrett English, a youth organizer for the ACLU, that they heard cursing. Milwaukee police said in a statement that residents had complained that about 30 to 40 people gathered around 8 p.m. near the area where Sylville Smith, 23, was fatally shot by an officer August 13.
As he was taken to a police vehicle, Brostoff says members of the crowd began to tell officers who he was. Both men were thrown to the ground, handcuffed, searched without consent, and placed in a paddy wagon.
“This is a residential neighborhood where there are a lot of really good people who live there and they want to have their street back and I’m very sympathetic to that and our police department is trying to reestablish that as well as it can”, Barrett said.
Brostoff said he was “totally compliant”, did nothing wrong and was only in the neighborhood to help. The Wisconsin Department of Justice, which is investigating the shooting, has not released the video.
The unrest, and subsequent lengthy rebuilding process follows the shooting of Sylville K. Smith, 23, who ran from police on August 13 during a traffic stop.
Milwaukee police are investigating the circumstances surrounding these arrests to ensure proper procedures were followed. Sgt. Timothy Gauerke said that, during that process, it was discovered that two of the individuals arrested were not among the elected officials and community leaders who had made their presence known to police, and they were ultimately released at the scene. Police have said body-cam footage shows Smith was holding a handgun and had turned toward the officer.
A protest erupted into violence in the largely black neighborhood just hours after the shooting.
