Arrival of Jason Day: Aussie fulfills potential with a major
And yet, this isn’t about the incredible season that Jordan Spieth’s had.
“Easy a loss as I’ve ever had”, Spieth said.
Holding a two-shot lead going into the final round, Day made four birdies in the first seven holes before bogeying the eighth.
Spieth finished outright second on 17 under to cap a stunning year in the major tournaments – the Masters and U.S. Open champion following up his tied-for-fourth at The Open with a brilliant surge in Wisconsin.
The 27-year-old carded a closing round 67 to finish three shots clear of the United States’ Jordan Spieth and set a new major championship record.
He added that he was really happy with the way he played and that he could not ask for anything better than his performance. I mean, I left it all out there. “I was one of those guys where I was so close and I wasn’t the last man standing and it was frustrating for me”.
Their initial interaction resulted in an argument when Swatton, who was the golf coach, wanted Day to work on his short game.
The final steps in that journey might have been the most impressive.
Day’s final birdie of the day came on the par five 16 and put him a record-breaking 20 shots under par.
Spieth finished with a 17-under 271, in second place, overtaking Rory McIlroy at the top of the world rankings.
But Day thwarted that dream with a three-stroke win over Spieth, who nevertheless dislodged Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy from the number one spot he had held for 55 consecutive weeks. “And he went about it like a seasoned veteran, nearly like it was his fifth or sixth major”.
McIlroy, who played above expectations after coming back from a ruptured ankle ligament, closed with a 68 for nine-under, but it was not enough to deny Spieth, victor of the Masters and U.S. Open, a fresh honor. “And each time after it came off the face, the hope was lost”. Spieth, faced with an impossible stance over a bunker shot in front of the green, splashed it to within 2 feet and matched him. But it’s just a special place that I will never forget, just from the experience that I’ve had just seeing the fans out there, the volunteers, being able to walk down 18. “I’m thinking that I’ll get this birdie, I’ll stretch my lead”. It baffles me, the stuff he can prove out there. “Day’s resounding triumph carried historical weight, too“. That is dominance of a kind we haven’t seen in a while, but Jason Day’s breakthrough was insurmountable even by Spieth. “He’s been chasing this for a long, long time and I think to have gone so close on so many occasions, nailing one was his priority and he’s done that”.
“That’s the moments where you have to pull yourself back and say, ‘No, I’m not going to have that”.
“I’ve changed so much from where I was and what I saw as a kid to where I am now”, Day said.
“Honestly, the way Jordan has been playing and the way I haven’t played much this year… if he does go to No. 1 today, it’s very deservedly so”, McIlroy said.
