Arsenal aren’t afraid to spend, says Wenger
Wenger is already under huge pressure just one game into the new season after a 4-3 home defeat against Liverpool last Sunday, with the Arsenal boss insisting he has not been surprised by the tidal wave of negativity that has flowed his way once again from fans and the media in recent days.
Theo Walcott made the breakthrough in the first half for the hosts but Arsenal squandered their lead as goals from Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane sealed a comeback win for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
While a move for Germany worldwide Mustafi has been mooted, Arsenal have also been linked with Fonte. Those are the kind of decisions which seemed to go Leicester’s way so much on their march to the PL trophy last season.
Champions Leicester were held to a frustrating draw at the King Power Stadium as Arsenal ground out a point after their opening day defeat.
They are the kind of qualities possessed by Suarez, a player Wenger famously tried to sign for Arsenal for the odd sum of £40,000,001 before eventually going after Sanchez a year later. “It is right when you need the players and you identify the players and we are not scared to spend money, but to buy in itself is not a quality but to buy the good players is a quality”.
The dying seconds of the game saw the Foxes win a free kick on the edge of the box, but Drinkwater’s effort was blocked by his own player. “This club has been built on that”.
“We spoke together last season and in pre-season and he told me he wanted to stay”.
Asked about the poignancy of Vardy scoring against the Gunners, Wenger replied whilst chuckling “I don’t know!”
“I want to keep Serge Gnabry and to extend his contract, because we stood by him for a long time”.
Summer signing Nampalys Mendy went down holding his ankle, having awkwardly fallen to the turf, and despite attempting to run off the pain, Claudio Ranieri was forced into a change, bringing on Andy King.
The ex-Manchester United player was injured in May and was expected to be out for one whole season but Wenger has revealed that he will return around Christmas to add more depth to the team.
“That was the good news of last week, the only good news”.
“You should ask him that question, I can’t answer for him”.
“What matters is that once you commit somewhere you give 100 per cent, that is what it is to be professional, he has made a decision to stay at Leicester and I respect that fully”.
The game sprung into life in the final stages with Petr Cech denying Riyad Mahrez with a great stop and Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud adding extra impetus to Arsenal’s attack late on but neither team could find a way through as contentious calls stole the show instead.
Ramsey suffered a hamstring injury in the game, while midfielder Alex Iwobi suffered a thigh injury.
