Arsenal boss ready to drop under-fire star for Bayern clashes
Wenger’s decision to play David Ospina in goal instead of Cech proved to be costly as the Colombia international’s freakish error gifted the visitors their second goal in a 3-2 win.
After falling behind to Felipe Pardo’s deflected opener, Arsenal equalised through Theo Walcott.
Yet Wenger remained defiant when asked if he regretted his failure to send out his strongest team. “If you leave the game thinking the defeat is down to playing Ospina then I question your knowledge in the game”.
“When you don’t win the games you’re wrong, not always for the reasons that people will analyse but you have to accept that”.
When asked if he regretted the call, he bullishly replied: “I honestly don’t want to go into that conversation with you. It is quite boring because nobody came out with numbers of this game where the game was won and lost”, the Gunners boss continued.
Merson believes his former club’s chances of progressing to knockout stages of the Champions League looks slim.
In his time at Arsenal, he has opened his Premier League scoring account while also earning global acclaim from Roy Hodgson.
However, Arsenal’s task has been made that much more hard following an injury sustained by key centre-back Laurent Koscielny, who was withdrawn for Mertesacker in the defeat to Olympiacos. I think you lack a bit of creativity in the press at the moment and you all follow a bandwagon that is very, very, very, very boring.
“You can not select a team by making a poll before the game and get everybody’s opinion”.
“It leaves us in a bad position but we are still in it”, said Wenger.
“It (being top) is a great boost for us and it raises a few eyebrows”, Jones said.
“I do not have to sit here and give you any explanation about every decision I make”, he snapped at his post-match press conference.
But the Real Sociedad loanee revealed his side had prepared to make the most of Arsenal’s lapses at the back.
“We lacked discipline. Even when you get a goal back don’t rush yourself”. The Greek side, who couldn’t win in their previous twelve games against English soccer clubs at their own territory.
He added: “We can improve and we have to show it against Arsenal, it is not an easy match but we have to show it”.
It is a problem for the manager and we have already seen what can happen this season with Ospina´s howler this week and also when Arsenal had to bring in Chambers and Gabriel in the Premier League game against Liverpool.
