Arsenal Draw to Go Top, United Win at Liverpool

It was only three weeks ago that Manchester United was on an eight-match winless streak, Wayne Rooney was so out of form he was dropped to the bench, and manager Louis van Gaal appeared to be contemplating resigning.

Despite the poor result in the end, the Red Devils will enter Anfield confident, as they have managed to defeat Liverpool away from home 11 times, more than any other club.

Wayne Rooney was delighted to score the winning goal, taking his Manchester United tally in the Premier League to 176 – more than any player has managed for one club.

“Everyone knows the importance of this game – regardless of league positions, it is a massive football game and it is a great victory”, Rooney told Sky Sports. “We have to continue this… we can do it (win the league)”.

Sergio Aguero starred for City against Palace at Etihad Stadium, scoring twice as they won the match 4-0.

With nine take-ons, 100% of his tackles (including an excellent one in his own box in the first half) and one chance created, Martial gave Liverpool plenty of problems for the whole game. We started 2015 very good, with a lot of wins and draws – we didn’t lose.

Wayne Rooney will be looking to score in four successive games for Manchester United for the first time since March 2012. United goalkeeper David de Gea kept out both shots, again demonstrating his importance and Liverpool’s need for a top-quality striker to finish off good build-up play.

David de Gea was superb for United, while Liverpool – despite spending in excess of £180 million on attacking players in the past two summers – did not have enough of a threat in the final third.

“I understand Ferguson – who has refused offers to comment on United since he stepped down – wouldn’t refuse that request, especially from one of his favourite former stars, although it’s believed he wouldn’t want a return to the dugout”. Thankfully I got a chance and took it.

He added to the BBC: “This is a special feeling, obviously”. “Today it was important because our competitors lost points and when the gap [at the top] is like this we can overturn that”.
