Arsenal fans troll Spurs after Perez hat-trick
There could be some bad news coming.
Arsene Wenger has suggested Arsenal could play a full-strength side in Tuesday’s Champions League tie in Basel, despite only having an outside chance of topping their group.
Both sides progressed to the next stage.
“The first two were quite easy goals, created by the team”, said Wenger.
Basel pulled one back in the 78th minute through Seydou Doumbia, who played a one-two with Janko before slipping the ball past Ospina, but Arsenal were able to see out the remainder of the game with Ludogorets doing them a favour in Paris.
Things went swimmingly for Arsenal, however.
Their only hope of topping the group was help from Bulgarians Ludogorets, who twice led in Paris and, despite Angel di Maria’s late equaliser, held on to seal a place in the Europa League.
And Arsenal ran out to a simple win.
PSG would have sealed top spot with victory, with anything less allowing in the Gunners, who took control through two Perez tap-ins.
And then he completed his hat trick just after halftime with a fine, slotted finish.
Rio Ferdinand says that it is up to Arsenal’s current crop of players to prove their doubters wrong this season.
It almost got even better for the visitors, as Alexis struck the bar with a tremendous free kick with twenty minutes remaining.
Gunners enter the last 16 as group winners for the first time since 2011.
Another option is either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund, which play Wednesday in Spain with the leadership of Group F at stake.
They also showed the swagger when they needed it to ruthlessly put Basel away to fulfil their side of the bargain while Ludogorets delivered the big favour in Paris. I watched them against [West Ham] at the weekend. It’ll be a memory they will savour for years to come. Despite finishing first in the group, Arsenal can end up with a hard opponent in the round of 16. And it should be another win for the Gunners on Tuesday.
Ahead of the final matchday, the list of group winners set to be potential opponents for Arsenal in the round-of-16 is now made up by Napoli, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Monaco, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus.
The same question was asked of Gerrard prior to the game, the Liverpool legend explaining what’s been missing at Arsenal in recent years.
For it is an odds on certainty that Arsene Wenger’s outfit will finish second in Group A of the competition and thus face a “top team” in the knockout stages which will give fans the chance to bet on the best games easily when the competition resumes in February.
Which is all extremely Arsenal.
