Arsenal’s Official Website Shows Brondby AND Barcelona as the Club’s Next
As fate has it though, the Blues have managed to draw the French champions, for a third season in a row, in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Arsenal fans from across the globe were left wondering where their luck had gone after FC Barcelona were drawn against the Gunners for the Champions League round of 16 that took place on Monday.
And, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo’s print edition, the Barcelona squad were so pleased with drawing the Gunners that they erupted with happiness after Arsenal’s name was read out. “We’re two sides with a similar understanding of the game”, said Barca director Albert Soler.
“It is an attractive tie, Arsenal are a good team with magnificent players and they play really good football”. Holders Sevilla, who also exited the Champions League last week, play Norwegians Molde.
With a 17-point lead in Ligue 1, there is no doubt that PSG will be rested and rejuvenated for the round-of-16 clash with the London club-no matter the state that Chelsea find themselves in February, PSG will start the tie as favourites to advance.
Chelsea board member David Barnard believes Chelsea will be motivated by last season’s defeat to PSG.
Also, it was: PSV Eindhoven vs. Atletico Madrid; Dynamo Kiev vs. Manchester City; and Benfica vs. Zenit St. Petersburg.
Although Barca can boast the famed forward trident of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, Miles claimed Arsenal, who will play the first leg at home on February 23, have their own players to grace the occasion.
Last month UEFA ordered Kiev to play their next three European home games behind closed doors as punishment for racist behaviour by fans during their group game against Chelsea in October. Return legs are on 8-9 and 15-16 March. Arsenal are a team who like to have the ball and we will enjoy that.
Now to the Round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League draw, where England’s Manchester United have been paired with Danish champions Midtjylland. It’s going to be hard for us but the most important thing is that we show we’re improving in this competition and we’ll fight to get to the quarters.
“There is a great danger when you go to a draw – Dynamo Kiev they have been in a very tough group phase with Porto and Chelsea”.
Meanwhile, ex-Real Madrid and Spain striker Emilio Butragueno, now a club director with the La Liga giants, admitted the draw could have been worse for Rafael Benitez’s side. They are growing in the competition and it will be a big challenge but we hope to be ready.
“They are a strong side, but they like to play football and it is just 11 vs 11”.
