Arsene Wenger shrugs off Arsenal transfer pressure
Haven lost their opening game to Liverpool at the Emirate stadium, Arsenal played out a goalless draw with champions Leicester City on Saturday.
“It was important [to sign a defender] before the Liverpool game already”, Wenger said.
“I don’t understand it, the ideal example is Ajax”.
“What matters to me is that you have 600 employees and can afford to pay them”. Have I done well, yes? On that front, I believe when you conceded four goals last week we have shown a great defensive performance.
“It’s not just about spending the money”.
Arsene Wenger says he is prepared to enter the transfer market before the window closes on 31 August. We are ready to do that.
“I enjoy watching Arsenal play now”, he added.
“It’s amusing that we come out of football games and have to speak about money instead of football games”. You have to speak about money. If we can find players who can strengthen our team then we will do that.
“This Arsenal Invincibles was quite like the French national team when we won the World Cup in ’98, when we had physical players, players with flair, players with pace. It is unsafe. English clubs suffocate themselves by buying players at a high price with high wages, if it goes wrong you are left with high wages”. “You should be happy because he’s English”, he said. “I am sorry he didn’t cost £55 million, so he can’t be good”.
‘I think this club has been built on that.
They host Swansea next week and captain Wes Morgan believes a point was a step in the right direction.
ARSENE WENGER, Gunners’ manager, on his central-defence dilemma.
“They [fans] are highly influenced by the media and that is part of the process today”.
“He will have to find the right balance because if he thinks he will win games by himself that will be a massive mistake for him, if he tries to do something that he can’t do that will be a massive mistake as well”. “It’s as simple as that”. Whilst stalwarts like Laurent Koscielny and Mesut Ozil were back for the game, the Gunners are still missing their first choice striker, Olivier Giroud, who was given an extended holiday after helping France to the final of Euro 2016.
The outcome might have been different had Mark Clattenburg seen merit in penalty claims from Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater and substitute Ahmed Musa during the closing stages of each half.
Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri, however, was phlegmatic.
“I must say I got a few signings wrong but it is impossible to make 400 signings and get none wrong”.
“For me, it’s OK”. I think it’s very hard to find players and identify them.
