As Eagles’ muddled coaching search continues, puzzled fans sound off
McAdoo, the 17th head coach in Giants history, was the team’s offensive coordinator the past two years.
Manning, who was visibly emotional when Tom Coughlin resigned earlier this month, reportedly lobbied ownership to bump McAdoo up to head coach.
The Giants stayed within the staff to replace Tom Coughlin, who stepped down last week after 12 seasons in the post.
“I’m honoured. It has been a privilege to work and learn under coach Coughlin”.
“We were all impressed with his energy, his enthusiasm, his vision and his desire”, Mara said. “I think Coach McAdoo is a great coach, a great teacher, and will be a great leader of this team”, said Manning, who voiced his support for McAdoo after the season. Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch along with general manager Jerry Reese intimated that their coaching search would be swift, but extensive and McAdoo ended up being the best fit for the organization. According to NJ.com’s list, those are the only three candidates who the Eagles interviewed who are still available.
The San Francisco 49ers also had shown interest in Coughlin, though that would have required a cross-country move. He’s thrown 65 touches with a 92.9 QB rating over the last two seasons.
The Giants announced McAdoo’s appointment on Thursday, preferring the 38-year-old over the five other candidates they interviewed.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, preparing for a second-round playoff game this weekend, told Bob Glauber of Newsday that he believes McAdoo, who he worked closely with in Green Bay, is ready for a head coaching opportunity.
The Giants (6-10) had the NFL’s eighth-ranked offense in total yards and were No. 6 in scoring in 2015. I figured him or Spagz would have been a great pick.
He’ll hire former Packers offensive coordinator and Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin as the team’s offensive coordinator.
He served as the team’s offensive coordinator the past two seasons.
Long before he was a Tom Coughlin assistant coach, Ben McAdoo was a Mike McCarthy assistant coach.
“I’m very happy for Ben to be in this position with the opportunity in front of him”, McCarthy said. Manning has had two excellent statistical seasons under McAdoo’s direction, with his interceptions going down and his completion percentage going up.
